Dr. Safford is a native of South Dakota. She graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin with a U.S. Army Reserve Commission. She completed her residency at Brooke Army Medical Center Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She has been a practicing surgeon since 1977. In 1983, she left active duty as a major and entered private practice specializing in diseases of the breast. She is a cancer survivor herself.
Dr. Safford has been on staff at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital since 1983. She has served the hospital in several capacities, including chief of staff and chairman of the Bioethics and Cancer Study and Education Committees. She recognizes the benefit to the community of many of the local organizations devoted to healthcare for cancer patients. She previously served on the board of directors of Methodist Healthcare Ministries, Methodist HealthCare System, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation; and she was medical director for the American Cancer Society’s Reach for Recovery program.
Dr. Safford is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
