There has been much advancement in cancer research and treatment options over the years. One of the most notable technologies is Stereostatic Radio Surgery. Stereostatic Radio Surgery (SRS) is only possible because of highly advanced technologies that deliver a maximum dose of radiation within a targeted tumor area while minimizing damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.
Treatment plans are created down to sub-millimeter accuracy based on the actual shape, size and position of the tumor, as determined through 3D medical imaging (CT scans). The delivery of the treatment dose itself is split over dozens of different angles, aimed directly at the tumor.
What is stereostatic radio surgery?
Stereostatic radio surgery is a nonsurgical, very precise form of radiation therapy. It is used to treat tumors in the brain, lung, or other forms of cancers that require a high degree of precision. Regular radiation therapy treats the entire body; SRS targets only the cancer cells, preserving more healthy tissue. This type of precise treatment has fewer side effects and is becoming increasingly popular.
The experienced doctors at the START Center for Cancer Care use CyberKnife technology to deliver stereostatic radio surgery. CyberKnife surgery is neither a knife nor a surgery. It is a noninvasive, precise radiation therapy that is just as effective as traditional forms of radiation treatment. Because of the high dosage, each treatment is shorter, lasting about an hour. Further, SRS treatments are usually completed within one week, as compared to 40-plus days with conventional radiation therapy.
What are the benefits of stereostatic surgery?
The benefits of stereostatic surgery include:
- Generally pain-free
- Non-surgical procedure
- No incision
- No risk of infection
- Does not require general anesthesia
- Outpatient procedure
- Little to no recovery time
- Minimal side effects
- Typically completed in one week
The START Center for Cancer Care has the only CyberKnife system in the San Antonio area. We provide complete care for cancer, including all traditional treatment, integrative therapies, support resources and the compassion and commitment you need when facing cancer.
